Greece is a country of islands, it's no wonder therefore that there are so many ferry companies and services available. Most of the Greek ferry and hydrofoil services are not published on the Internet and many don't have timetables, operating usually on the basis of demand.

There are scheduled ferry services between Athens and the main Greek islands for both passengers and all types of vehicle, these services can be booked in advance, in fact during the summer season reservations are recommended.

It is generally not necessary to pre-book short journey, inter-island ferries and hydrofoils. The most practical way to tour the Greek islands is to check ferry schedules with the local port offices on arrival at each island and then make onward reservations.

There are no direct ferry services between Athens and Turkey, the only ferry connections between Greece and Turkey are from the larger Dodecanese islands adjacent to Turkey.
